Transcriptomics is the bioinformatic analysis of the regulation and the expression of genes within certain tissues and developmental stage.

Gene expression micro-arrays

Micro-arrays are a popular tool to measure simultanuously the gene expression level of thousands of genes. Commercial microarrays are available for most model species. You can also create your own 'custom made' microarray.

By sequencing of the RNA pool of tissues or cells via a copy DNA intermediate step, we are able to obtain a set of sequences resembling the transcriptionally active genes. This is currently the broadest view we have on the transcriptome. This data can reveal information on expression levels, alternative splicing (isoforms), RNA-editing, short RNA species (e.g. miRNA) and more.
