Excel: How to get out of a Print Preview of an Office section?
In case you have activated the Print Preview via the File Menu of the Office section, the preview window is shown in the section tab. Please press the ESC key to return to the normal Office menu.

How to print an Office section in E-Notebook?

There are two different approaches for printing experimental data stored in Office sections. Approach 1: You can use the ‘File’ menu of the respective Office section which is accessible in each section (see screenshot). Approach 2: You can print the respective Office section following the standard approach which is accessible for all available sections in any experiment. Right-clicking on the name of the section and select ‘Print’.

Word: "Sorry, Removing Word macros failed. Please make sure..." warning appears when opening a Word file in ELN

If you click OK you can proceed without any problems. To avoid this error follow this procedure: 1. Open MS Word (make sure no Word file is opened in ELN) 2. Go to File - Options 3. Select 'Trust Center' and click on 'Trust Center Settings' 4. Select 'Macro Settings' 5. Enable the option Trust access to the VBA project object model and click 'OK' 6. Click 'OK' 7. When you open a Word file in ELN you will no longer get a warning

Saving of an experiment fails due to large Office documents

Sometimes, you observe the following error when trying to save a large Office document: Sorry, while saving, …, the total size for documents in this collection is greater (…) than 21 MB. Possible solutions: This error occurs because you try to upload a large file in an experiment. Due to performance reasons, the file size for uploading is limited to 21 MB per experiment. Please try to make two files and separate the experiment e.g. into two experiments. Alternatively, you could try to add smaller images (i.e. use ImageJ, IrfanView or GIMP to generate smaller files) to the Office document.

PowerPoint 2007: Compatibility Checker Warning Issued

Sometimes, users get a Compatibility Checker Window when they are trying to save a PowerPoint 2007 document in ELN. Unfortunately, the Compatibility Checker window does not seem to be accessible with the mouse. Reason: This compatibility warning is issued on computers which work with Belgian Regional Settings. Possible solutions: • Hit the ‘Enter’ key to close the window. Subsequently, the PowerPoint document is saved in ELN. In order to suppress the warning message completely, you can opt to change the Regional Settings on your PC to English/US. Please contact your local IT support for further support. This problem has been signaled to the vendor of the ELN software support and is been worked on with high priority. We hope to receive an update of the ELN software soon.

How to avoid Share Violation Error in Excel (Office 2007 - 2010)

Some people experience that Excel 2007 or Excel 2010 gives a specific ‘Share Violation Error’ after copy/paste actions between Excel sheets which ends up in an endless loop. This loop can only be stopped by force-quitting ELN. Unfortunately, it seems impossible to reproduce the error. Remedy: Please change your Regional Settings to English/US. This can be done as non-admin user. Below the procedures are shown for all Windows flavors. Please use the Location tab and select ‘English/US’ instead of e.g. ‘Dutch/Belgian’. For Windows XP: The country or region setting in Windows, referred to as location, indicates the country or region that you are in. Some software programs and services provide you with local information, such as news and weather, based on this setting. Open Regional and Language Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then clicking Regional and Language Options. Change the Location dropdown, select your location from the list, and then click OK. How to display inserted Images in Word immediately?

Some E-Notebook users on the Citrix platform experience that images are not shown instantaneously when they open an Word section type. If you switch to the ‘Full Screen Reading’ Document View or print out the Word file, the image is displayed or printed as expected. Remedy: The display issues of certain images in Word seem to be related to the standard settings of the text wrapping for images. Therefore, we recommend to standardly apply the Text Wrapping mode ‘Top and Bottom’ once you have inserted the image in Word.

Excel 2007: How to get out of ‘Attempt to Access Invalid Address’ Error?

Some E-Notebook users get the following error when they work with the Excel standalone version and Excel in E-Notebook at the same time. This error can easily be circumvented without having to force-quit E-Notebook. Remedy: When you see the below error when you are trying to view the MS-Excel section in an experiment. Error : "Sorry , Attempt to access invalid address". This issue is mostly observed when the Temp Location is full or if you have issues in the Temp or tmp Environment variable configuration on the machine. Suggestion: Try to clear the Temp folder and refresh the ELN and perform the action. If you are sure that changing the TEMP or TMP path would work with your other 3rd party softwares. Just change the path from %userprofile%/appdata to other drives.

Excel 2007: How to copy paste from one Excel section to another?

Copy/Pasting from one sheet of a Excel section (tab) to another Excel tab within E-Notebook while preserving the formatting can be achieved via a temporary Excel file opened in a standalone Excel application. Please try the following steps (the order of switching between ELN and Excel is important!): Open Excel tab in an experiment Copy the content (ctrl + c) of some cells (e.g. cells with formatting) to the clipboard Open Excel outside ELN Paste (ctrl + v) the content to Excel outside ELN (formatting is preserved) Switch back to ELN and open the second Excel tab you’d like to copy to Switch back to Excel outside ELN Copy the temporary content to the clipboard Switch back to ELN and paste (ctrl +v) into the Excel The formatting is preserved.

Word: How to display hidden textboxes

Case Since yesterday, I have a problem with viewing of my text-boxes on Microsoft Word documents in ELN (I use the text boxes to label my gel images). If I change the view from print layout to full screen reading then I am able to view the textboxes again and the correct positions. Remedy 1. Display the Word Options dialog box. Word 2007: click the Office button and choose Word Options. Word 2010: click the File tab of the ribbon and click Options. 2. Click Advanced at the left side of the dialog box. 3. Scroll through the options until you can see the Show Document Content section (see figure below). 4. Make sure the Show Picture Placeholders check box is cleared. 5. Make sure the Show Drawings and Text Boxes on Screen check box is selected. 6. Click on OK.

Excel crashes in E-Notebook when adding CUSTOM error bars

Case Excel 2010 in E-Notebook crashes reproducibly when CUSTOM error bars are added to an Excel section. Remedy Answer from Software Support: We received information from our R&D team saying that this issue is a problem with the third party control (DSOFramer) used for Office sections and this issue is reproducible with DSOFramer application outside E-notebook, too. This means that this issue is a limitation which cannot be fixed currently. Work-around Please prepare your Excel file outside of E-Notebook when adding the error bars and import it once the error bars have been added.

Word: "Sorry, Removing Word marcos failed." error when importing a Word file

Case When you want to import a .doc file in ELN, you can get an error, even if this file is exported from ELN. Remedy 1 When you adjust your exported Word file or want to import a new .doc document, save it as .docx instead of .doc. When importing a .docx file there will be no error message. Remedy 2 1. Open Word outside ELN 2. go to File - Options - Trust Center - Trust Center Settings - Macro Settings 3. Under Developer Macro Settings you have a checkbox "Trust acces to the VBA...". Tick this checkbox! 4. Close all Word windows (including in ELN) 5. You should be able to import both .doc and .docx files

Embedded Office applications seems zoomed in (large fonts) in ELN - client installation (Windows 8.1 and 10)

Case When you open a Word or Excel file in your ELN client software things seems very large and unreadable for a small screen. Remedy 1. Go to Start - Control Panel - Appearances and Personalization - Display 2. If this setting is set to Larger slide the selector to the middle or left (Smaller) - depending on your screen resolution 3. Close ELN and all Office programs and log off from your computer 4. Log back in. When you open an Office file (inside or outside ELN) the scaling issue will be solved

PowerPoint 2013: copy/paste one slide to another PowerPoint file in ELN gives error

Case When you copy a slide from a PowerPoint file (inside or outside ELN) and paste this (using right-click) in another PowerPoint file in ELN, you get an error and the software blocks. Remedy When this happens shut ELN down using the 'Task Manager' (right-click on Start bar). When you try to copy the slide and want to right-click on the new location of the slide, do not right-click in between the slides you want to paste. You must right-click on a slide and then drag and drop it to the location you want. You can always use CRTL+C and CTRL+V instead to copy/paste a slide.
