Gnome Disk Utility
The one tool you need for managing disk, file format systems on it and labels. It is default in virtually linux distributions. If not, install it searching gnome-disk-utility.
Plug in e.g. an empty USB stick: reformat it in NTFS. |

Open Disk Utility |
Find the USB key in the left column listing all disks |
Unmount the USB key by pressing the button Unmount. This means that the USB key is not accessible anymore for file browsing. |
Click the format button |
Choose NTFS in the window, and enter the self-chosen name for the key. |
Confirm that you have chosen the correct device. |
Wait until formatting is finished. |
Mount the volume back again by clicking Mount Volume |
You can access the USB key from within the mount point. |
